AGI - A Communication Breakdown
In the AI world, there has been a struggle between the field, which creates but does not understand, and the public, which consumes but does not trust.
What are AI labs attempting to communicate to the outside world? And are they doing so successfully?
Key definition:
- AGI; (Artificial General Intelligence) ..."a type of artificial intelligence that has the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human can do. Unlike today’s AI systems that are designed to perform specific tasks – like recognizing speech, driving a car, or playing chess – AGI would replicate human intelligence at a broad level. In other words, AGI would be capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge across various domains, much like how we can." IMD Blog
The word 'communication' gets tossed around a lot.
In the professional world, along with the word 'cross-functional', 'communication' is perhaps the single most common word used in non-technical job postings. Although many groups emphasize the importance of communication, there seems to be a lack of shared understanding across disciplines.
In the AI world, there has been a struggle between the field, which creates but does not understand, and the public, which consumes but does not trust.
This communication gap does not bode well in the face of emergent AGI.
When asked, many intelligent and educated individuals in the United States outside the tech field may not even know what AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is. Even fewer have been following recent developments and announcements. **At the date of this article's production, March 2026, in an interview with podcaster Lex Friedman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has recently claimed that AGI has already been achieved.
What are the potential risks of a general public who is unaware of the realities of current AGI progress?
- Concentration of Power
While operating under the cover of dubious understanding and belief, a small group of individuals, AI labs, researchers, and select policymakers becomes the de facto descision-makers for the immediate future of humanity. In this situation, the public can't meaningfully question, regulate, or guide development. Oversight is prefunctory. This is how the world is currently operating.
Some would argue that the process of governance is too bloated and immobile to keep pace with the rapidly developing technology, and thus that concentrated descision making such as that under the current conditions is necessary regarding the production of a tool that has such global (and existential) implications.
Although the current method may be more efficient, combined with the natural mechanisms of capitalism within the United States and of geopolitical competition internationally, it enables an environment of uncertaininty that is most comperable to an arms race.
- Lack of Cross-Functional Input
(To put the other most popular job application word to use), one of the most serious issues created by a lack of public awareness on AGI status is the lack of cross-functional collaboration. Most AI engineers, researchers, and other AI lab staff are highly specialized, technical individuals, with no background or training in any other field.
Similarly, a tool that is being created using data gleaned from the general population and which has serious implications for the general population must include input from those with non-technical backgrounds. Otherwise, those organizations working on the most massive technological advancement of all time are going to miss both problems and opportunities that could have been obvious.
The basics of communication
In order to understand both why the general public seems to be unaware of current AGI progress and how to effectively communicate with them, representatives of the AI field must clarify their own goals and understand their audience.
When you think of the word communication, what comes to mind?
At a base level, communication is the attempt to convey meaning to another being.
This definition is well-demonstrated in the recent film adaptation of Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, starring Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace.
In the film, Grace encounters an intelligent non-human being (Rocky), with whom he tries various methods of communication. Grace's attempt at communication is a key facet of the film, which hinges on collaboration between the two.
This part of the film poses a fascinating thought experiment;
- the other being in the film is non-humanoid (not human-shaped), more similar in appearance to a collection of rocks than to the body of a human, with no discernible face,
- but is obviously intelligent.
If you had to communicate with a non-humanoid, with no knowledge of its culture, or even of the way its body functions, how would you do it?
Strip down your assumptions, begin only with what you know, then continue to observe and pivot as you gain more information.
When communicating as an individual in your own life, as a representative of the AI community, or as a representative of another group- use this principle. By excising your assumptions and responding only to present observations, you will operate from a basis of understanding of your audience.
What are the three essential elements of effective communication?
A strong communicator is someone who conveys meaning clearly and appropriately to their current audience.
- Clarity
- Explains ideas in a way others immediately understand
- Avoids unnecessary complexity or jargon
- Can simplify complex topics without losing accuracy
- Structure
- Organizes information logically (top-down, step-by-step, etc.)
- Can present updates, arguments, or plans in a coherent way
- Audience awareness
- Adjusts tone, detail, and format based on who they’re talking to
- Knows what matters to each audience
- Communicates fluently
- Goal-orientation
- Has a clear purpose
- Moves with intent
- If communicating as a group, approaches from a point of consensus
Moving forward
We are approaching an exciting time in AI development. We are on the precipice of some great advancements in human knowledge.
Now, more than ever, it is important for the entire population to be aware of what progress is being made toward AGI.
The AI community has a responsibility to approach their audience from a place of understanding, and to effectively communicate their progress to the world.
